The Historic District of Panama City was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. Since then, real estate has skyrocketed, tourism is on the rise, and the area has gained a sudden popularity with an upper class crowd. Most people are unaware, however, that historical events led to many owners abandoning their homes. To complicate the situation, tenants continued to live in the houses after they were abandoned, often without paying rent. With the return of owners to reclaim their houses, residents are being forced out. The existence of a local vein opposing the situation has led to difficulties in beautifying the district and has created a controversial situation that is seldom recognized.
